Kathmandu, Nepal — The Election Commission Nepal has initiated diplomatic efforts to facilitate the removal of a controversial documentary produced by BBC News, citing concerns over its potential impact on the country’s electoral environment.

Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari stated that while the Commission has serious reservations about the documentary’s content and timing, existing domestic legal provisions do not grant it direct authority to compel an international media outlet to take down published material. As a result, the Commission is pursuing the matter through diplomatic communication channels.

Concerns Over Electoral Impact

According to the Commission, the documentary — which examines last year’s Gen Z protest movement and allegations surrounding the use of force by security agencies — was released during a politically sensitive period. Officials argue that such content could influence voter perception and disrupt the neutrality expected during ongoing electoral processes.

The EC previously wrote to the Press Council Nepal requesting necessary coordination and assessment regarding the documentary’s dissemination within Nepal. However, given the BBC’s international jurisdiction, domestic regulatory bodies have limited enforcement capacity.

The BBC report reportedly includes claims that former Inspector General of Police Chandra Kuber Khapung authorized the use of lethal force during the September protests in the capital. The documentary features interviews, eyewitness accounts, and investigative findings suggesting that unarmed demonstrators were subjected to live ammunition.

Nepal Police officials have previously denied accusations of unlawful use of force, maintaining that security personnel acted in accordance with crowd-control protocols under challenging circumstances.
